This is slow reading, but if you're looking for a book that has a lot of the sutras with no commentary then this is it. This has been a great daily reader for the last few months.UPDATE (April 7, 2017) - as the book as progressed there has been more commentary in some of the later chapters. I've really enjoyed the layout of the book following the path of texts over the years. I've also really enjoyed reading about Dwight Goddard on tr side, and really appreciate the compassion and dedication he showed in compiling this text for an English speaking audience in 1938!

Bought as a gift for my incarcerated son, and he is really getting a lot out of it!
I purchased this book thinking that it was the same as a book I used to have back in the mid-90's of the same title by the same author. I assumed that this was just an updated version, but the majority of text has been completely cut out in favor of large print. Very disappointed.
Not what I wanted. This one is missing a lot from the other edition. Be sure you are ordering the right copy.
My experience is identical to someone who posted last year. I ordered "A Buddhist
Bible" by Goddard to replace mine that I had given up (to release my attachment to it)
only to find I'm still attached. (I find that hilarious).
The correct one is paperback and has a black cover with
A red square on it with the Title "A Buddhist Bible edited by Dwight Goddard and a
forward by Robert Aitken." The description implied
the cover might look different but the "peek inside" table of contents was near 700 pages-like my old one. Turns out the table of contents WAS from the old version and the hardcover book I received (With a Buddha likeness on the front) only had 300+ pages and none of the text I wanted. Not even my favorite disciple "Ananda" with his wonderful lack of understanding and requests for the Buddha to more fully explain concepts. (I have missed him dearly).

the shorter version so be careful when ordering.)
I read this book over a few years (decades ago) savoring each page. More calming than Paxil and the side effects are wonderful!
I consider this my foundation of Buddhist knowledge. The book just arrived so
tomorrow 9/10/11 I will begin my reading enjoyment.
