Like Dickens's _David Copperfield_ , much of _These Twain_ focuses on relationships, particularly marriage, and particularly (although not exclusively) from the husband's point of view. Edwin and Hilda learn to accommodate one another. Much needed accommodation, because they are fundamentally unlike each other. I found the book wise. Bennett wrote a short work of non-fiction titled _The Human Machine_. Before reading _Twain_, a reader might, to enhance pleasure and understanding, read _Human Machine_.Product details

These Twain Arnold Bennett 9781406800791 Books Reviews
The continuation of 'Clayhanger' which is also excellent. Bennett follows Edwin's thoughts second by second, and captures the see-sawing emotions that are typical of marriage. He is not a spectacular writer (he is no Dickens) but he has honesty and compassion and a quiet sense of humour which wins you over.
“Roll Call”, the second book of this volume, continues the story of George growing to manhood, achieving financial success, and going off to fight in WW I. He was only a child in the Clayhanger trilogy. The time frame is a few years later and the impact of technology (electricity, motor cars, etc.) on middle class English society is apparent. “These Twain” is the third book of the trilogy. I reviewed it in my comments on the first two books. The principle characters from the trilogy make incidental appearances in “Roll Call”.
